Public Service Announcement [Jun. 26th, 2006|07:40 am]

The beach is a public place! Like the mall! Or the supermarket! Lady - please don't drop off your four-year old daughter alone while you park your car! Someone could have kidnapped her!

Gawd! What an idiot!

So... we went to the beach yesterday (Yes! I got to fly my kite! :D, but I digress...) and it's a way from the parking lot through the marina to the beach. Not a really long walk, but the general public parking lot is probably a good five minutes away from the shore.

Anyways, I am sitting at a picnic table under a covered area - so I'm not noticing any of this -- my sister and father tell me their parts and I piece it together. (By the way, I'm sitting at the table putting together three kites. That is my function in the family - I am the kite maker. ;) Actually, I put stuff together, program the VCR, change the clocks all to the correct times, well... you get the idea.)

An SUV pulls up to the curve. Just an unloading/loading area, not a parking space unless you actually have a permit. This woman drops off lawn/beach furniture (seats, umbrellas, coolers, etc.) and sets her four-year old daughter out. My sister who saw this was thinking... okay, the father or brother or someone older's going to come out of the car too, right? WRONG. The lady leaves her girl there and tells her to stay with the stuff as she drives off to go find parking.

My sister and our mom take two kites and walk off; they weren't watching the girl carefully either. And as I'm busy making another one, I'm not paying attention. When I'm done, I leave with the kite to go run after my sister and our mother.

My dad says the girl came up to him and started talking. She was really scared. She said she didn't know where her mother went. He said she wasn't crying, but he could tell from her voice that she was scared. So, he let her talk for maybe five minutes, as he thought her talking would make her feel better. Finally, her mother shows up and he points to her and says to the little girl, "Isn't that your mom?" So the girl runs back to her mom. End of Story.

Gawd! What is wrong with this? Thankfully, it was my dad, and he just kept an eye on her until her mom came back! But we're STRANGERs to them! What if she had walked up to a pedophile! Or some crazed lunatic! What is wrong with her mother?! Geesh! I would've given that woman a piece of my mind. But my dad was nice. He didn't say anything, and just let them be.

And then those are the type of people who are surprised when bad things happen to them.

The same type that leave their kids in the car when they run inside to get something and then forget about the time or that their kids are still there!

And that poor little girl... I hope she remembers that experience and doesn't repeat it for her own children. That's just awful!
